Worship through Music - May 6, 2012 - Bel Canto; Scott Dean, director.
Twenty years ago the most devastating conflict in Europe since the end of WWII, known as the Bosnian War, took place. It is estimated that 100,000 to 110,000 were killed, and over 2.2 million people displaced. Having lived in this region in the 1970’s, singer-songwriter Kurt Bestor was appalled and frustrated over the atrocities and ethnic cleansing that was taking place. Thinking of the children struggling to live in this difficult and dangerous time, Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian, all sharing the same feelings of confusion and sadness, he began writing Prayer of the Children. It is a cry to Jesus to help all the children whose home and freedom have been taken from them. Mr. Bestor writes, “Over the years, I’ve written many songs with melodies more memorable, lyrics more poetic, and harmonies richer. But none of my compositions has had the kind of reach and emotional effect of Prayer of the Children.” Bel Canto sang Prayer of the Children throughout their ministry to school children in Costa Rica in 2009, and the Senior class requested to include it in this year’s repertoire.
