El Barrio Today presents Manny Vega on the Spirit of East Harlem Mural.
The EL BARRIO TODAY ARTS CLUSTER is a group founded by East Harlem's cultural organizations in an effort to guide you through your discovery of the beauty and singularity of El Barrio's cultural identity.
EL BARRIO is an area located in East Harlem and carries a unique history that is still evident today. From the moment you arrive, you're surrounded by its colors, rhythms and intense cultural richness. Diversity is reflected everywhere you turn through a multitude of restaurants, shops, gardens, galleries and murals.
THE SPIRIT OF EAST HARLEM MURAL, homage to the neighborhood as it was in the 1970s, is made up of loving portraits of residents set in a landscape of high-rises. Artist Hank Prussing created the mural in 1978, and it was later restored by artist Manuel Vega as a celebration of the long-standing and Latino influenced tradition of murals.
