'Hammer of the Goddess' - Martin Sexton 2002

This film was shot entirely on the very first video Motorola A835 mobile phone back in 2002. It may qualify as the first genuine art film or artwork to be shot entirely on a mobile phone and features the artists episodic journey with the Prada-Meinhof Gang. The film 'Hammer of the Goddess' features the Prada-Meinhof Gang - an art piece created by Martin Sexton and forming part of his on-going 'Physical Literature' series - of which they formed an early component part - taking the guise of an 'art collective' to act as a go-between to the worlds of literature, music and art. Their actions have appeared on the front covers of the magazine Modern Painters - and as a consequence of their interventions at the 2003 Venice Biennale they featured on the front cover of the Guardian newspaper - The central image presented in the film is their 'Wanted Poster' that mirrors the original wanted poster of the Baader-Meinhof Gang. Under the banner 'History repeats itself, first as tragedy, then as Fashion' six women artists, writers and musicians - along with the artist and writer Martin Sexton formed the art collective and pop commune - The Prada-Meinhof Gang - playing on words and music, mixing artistic art forms, sampling and cutting-up novels - to form the lyrics to pop songs and constructing soundtracks from boot-leg remixes - the Prada-Meinhof claimed that they not only resurrected but destroyed what they ressurected. The complete work is referred to by the artist as Physical Literarture. The films has been exhibited widely - notably in Miami Art Basel, London ICA, Amnesty International HQ, London as well as Bregenz Kunstverein at the Palais Thurn Und Taxis in Austria - where the wanted poster is in their permanent collection. As well as central music production by Noko from the acclaimed Apollo 440 - 'Hammer of the Goddess' was also remixed by Jimmy Cauty of the legendary KLF.
