On April 17, 2012, the White House and LSC co-hosted a forum on the State of Civil Legal Assistance. The forum was introduced by LSC Board Chairman John G. Levi. U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and U.S. Department of State Legal Adviser Harold Koh spoke. Two panels (one moderated by LSC President James J. Sandman and featuring six executive directors of LSC-grantee programs, the other comprising seven distinguished public servants and moderated by LSC Board Vice-Chair Martha Minow) discussed many of the current challenges faced by those working to ensure equal access to justice. President Obama (no video available) closed the forum. In his remarks, the President said that making civil legal assistance available to low-income Americans is “central to our notion of equal justice under the law,” and pledged to be a “fierce defender and advocate” for legal services.
