For my architectural thesis exploration, I chose to explore the concepts of nanotechnology and its influence on the future of architectural materiality. Nanotechnology provides a platform for architectural transformation: molecular manipulation used to design smart materials that can respond to one another and to the environment. Architecture has succeeded in densifying our cities and making buildings more efficient. This project investigates how architectural thinking can be applied to agriculture. The Wonder Twins will mechanize the process of agriculture on the surface of the Los Angeles river using material intelligence to generate a self-sustaining environment that would transform agriculture into something more closely resembling nature’s ecosystems. The system relies on molecular design and implementation of ordinary materials to create an intelligent hydroponic system in which crops are grown in mineral nutrient solutions without using soil. The system grows and expands on its own, creating a smart farm in which our only participation is gathering the harvest.
