May 20, 2020: "Slave Quilts and Their Symbols" part 1 of a 2-part series by the Rev. Dr. Steve Simmons
How can we sing the Lord’s song in a foreign land?” People in exile, from the Israelites in Babylon to the present day, have not only asked this question, but found bold and creative ways to answer it. In this segment, we’ll see how enslaved Africans who had been deprived of their homes, their identities, and their very names, managed to preserve and pursue the hope of “a better country” by adapting traditional and biblical symbols, stories, and songs, in new and often surprising ways.
