Genomics in Medical Specialties - Neurology

Genomics Education Programme

Genomics is increasingly important in all areas of medicine.

In this film, consultant neurologist professor Huw Morris, of the Royal Free Hospital and University College London, explains why it is so important that all neurologists embrace genomics and genomic testing to offer the best care to patients.

Professor Morris outlines a number of key areas where new testing technology and medical advances are having an impact on patient care.

Professor Morris outlines key areas for consideration:

- There is a need to be aware of the possibility of genetic and genomic disease, not just for well-know neurogenetic conditions but for common conditions, too.

- As they will increasingly be working with genomics and genomic conditions, there is also a need for neurologists to familiarise themselves with some key aspects of counselling, including explaining testing, the meaning of test results, and the impact on families.

Professor Morris also emphasises the importance of the relationship between experts in medical specialties and genomics experts such as clinical geneticists and genetic counsellors, who should be consulted in more complex cases.

To give an example of how much of a difference advances in genomics can make, professor Morris looks at a gene-directed therapy for children with spinal muscular atrophy. Nusinersen has made a very big difference to the lives of children with this fatal, life-altering condition.

Professor Morris encourages other neurologists to look to the future and join him in getting behind this revolution in healthcare.

The Genomics in Medical Specialties series has been developed in collaboration with genomics champions across the health service, with the aim of supporting clinicians with the mainstreaming of genomic medicine.

Health Education England's Genomics Education Programme is developing a substantial education programme to inform healthcare professionals about the impact of genomics on clinical practice. This video is the one of the many educational resources from the programme.
