The is the story of Mamayila's battle to get her family home registered in her name. During the lengthy bureaucratic process she was charged a fee for documents by her Traditional Authority that elsewhere in South Africa would have been free. The Legal Resources Centre have found that the situation is common in Limpopo where people have to pay a fee for letters of recognition so that they can access government services. In Mamyila's case this fee was over half her monthly income, she along with many others who pay tribal levies would like to know where the money is spent.
The LRC is working with communities who are charged tribal levies and seeks to challenge the legislation and Traditional Authorities taking the levies.
