Qalqilya is a story about facing the most formidable barriers, and how we can repel off the walls that surround us and learn how to fly. This feature length documentary film is about a Palestinian skater who mentors a group of youth who skate, do parkour, perform beatbox and hip-hop in Qalqilya, a West Bank city surrounded by the Israeli wall. They call themselves the "X Games". In the face of the physical and cultural barriers confining them, these trailblazers are on a mission to find a place to play.
Sajed and the X Games take us on an adventure throughout the West Bank and into Israel, where we see them perform in various venues. Their flying, flipping and rhyming become gateways to this new-found freedom, giving them access to places that they would have otherwise never been invited to go.
Their goal, and the goal of the film, is to build the first skatepark in Palestine, in Qalqilya. Thanks to our partnership with Tashkeel, we are one step closer to this dream. In September we are building a skate ramp in Qalqilya.
We are also wrapping up production on the film and preparing for post-production. Come learn more about the project and join the adventure at qalqilyathefilm.com!
