May 27, 2020: "The Social Gospel in Hymns" part 2 of a 2-part series by the Rev. Dr. Steve Simmons
“Jerusalem, my happy home, when shall I come to thee?” From the songs of Zion in the book of Psalms to St. Augustine’s “City of God” to Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “beloved community,” people of faith have looked in hope to the fulfillment of God’s purposes in history. Is the New Jerusalem a fond, future hope or a call for people of faith to help restore God’s creation? We’ll examine this idea by looking at some hymns of the Revival, Abolitionist, and Social Gospel movements in 19th and 20th century America.
