I Waited a long time Synopsis:
A short improvised drama exploring a couple’s aspirations of reigniting their rocky relationship over a short break, not knowing that each have a secret to reveal, which conjures up a volcanic eruption of feelings.
Improvised and filmed with only an idea, two actors a camera and a small creative inquisitive crew over a guerrilla styled filmmaking day. The actors were only briefed their secrets and were told to play as the day progressed. The rest is what we filmed.
Directors notes by Nathan Theys
It’s very difficult to explain what we filmed but we tried to explore a couples emotions conjured, leading up to a break up. The team and I agreed that we would be innovative, intuitive and improvise our way as we built the narrative.
Together we tried to make the environment as comfortable enough to allow the actors to explore and be spontaneous as possible. Before the shoot, I gave the actors a history building day, where they would only explore the characters history. They would do this together but would not be allowed to discuss the film.
As we got to the shooting day the actors were then told secrets, which they were to keep from each other. With these secrets and a method of directing (me acting as their conscience) we then slowly built the loose narrative
Over the years I’ve been trying this method with the films I have been making. I feel that 'I WAITED A LONG TIME' is one film that I have learned a lot from, on how to improvise with the actors, a crew and the technical elements around it.
