Bethany Brodowsky has been in the foster system since she was 13, after being sexually abused as a child. Now 18, she is out of foster care and must find her own way. "Abuse pretty well condemns a human being to a life of feeling separate from other people, different from other people," says Ruth Gordon, a clinical social worker who works with foster children. "It can lead to a very lonely life. ... That these kids survive at all is miraculous."
