I shot this movie while travelling to Lac La Biche last year, along Highway 21 in alberta. I passed through a valley that was deep and had a campground and several ranches along the flat space at the bottom.
I passed through it once and realized the new camera I had also shot video, so I drove back and returned while shooting the video. It was only afterwards, while listening to it, that I realized how the audio on the first run seemed oddly appropriate. Quarks was playing on CBC Radio 1, and as I drove into the valley the conversation was about early hominids and their evolution. As I drove out of the valley the conversation turned to technology.
The second run wasn't nearly as interesting as the first, but now I want to try to build the context of discussion for these kind of videos. I have several which I find very interesting visually, but as a singular video they can also be rather boring. There is a time while watching, where we find ourselves distracted by the audio that the video begins to take on a different quality, we fill in the blanks, see or feel alternative sights in the background, populate it with whom we are hearing about on the audio.
I want to explore that a bit more. I want to work with people who want to explore that a bit more. This was the first of the movies I shot that summer, and I look forward to considering more this year...
