I went outside to feed the horses and stumbled over a major battle in my own backyard (made a mad dash back inside for the camera because WOW ;o)
The video is not the best, as the fighting was fast and furious with lots of scrambling. Normally with such small subjects I would get in close to shoot, however, this was about as close as I was willing to go (she flew at me several times - and yikes). Tried the zoom, but it was too fuzzy.
I had no idea what kind of insect this was with a red body and blue wings (other than the stinging kind) so I kept my distance. I looked it up and found that this is a Spider Wasp. She will paralyze the spider with venom and leave it incapacitated to feed her young. Ew. Notice how the spider folds its legs over itself for protection (not that it helped, right?)
