In Ian Whittlesea‘s 'The Demonstration of Gentleness' identical twins Helen and Kathryn Cartwright are seen demonstrating the Ju-no-Kata, a choreographed pattern of judo movement. The film references artist and judo devotee Yves Klein’s Les Fondements du Judo (The Foundations of Judo), published in 1954 and translated into English by Whittlesea in 2009.
The Demonstration of Gentleness was commissioned by the Stanley Picker Gallery, Kingston University, and is screened online as part of No Competition! a programme of events exploring the relationship between art and non-competitive sport. Please note: It is intended that the piece be viewed here online in standard Vimeo format and not enlarged to full-screen.
The Artist and the Stanley Picker Gallery would like to thank Helen and Kathryn Cartwright, the Croydon Judo Club, Tat Whalley, Derek ‘Smudge’ Smith, Alan Rickard, Shelia Hearsey, Karen French, The British Judo Association, Colin Cartwright, Dennis & Tina Penfold, the film crew Ella Marshall-Dutton, Yoyo Zhao Siyu, Henry Gray, the Kingston University Film Moving Image and Film Department, Philip Warnell, Marlborough Contemporary, and the Arts Council England for making this project possible.
