The text of Dark Night of the Soul is from the poem of the same name by the 16th-century mystic St. John of the Cross. The poem describes a soul's conduct along the spiritual road that leads to the perfect union with God through love, insofar as it is attainable in this life. The journey is called "dark night" because darkness represents the hardships and difficulties the soul meets in detachment from the world and reaching the light of the union with the Creator.
