When Olivia Nunn of Island records approached me to produce a commercial for the re-release of the Bob Marley album, Legend, I knew straight away what we should do.
With the record company’s brief wanting the advertising to celebrate an icon of music history, while at the same time engaging today’s youth, I knew that we needed to find a way to make that connection – and so the idea of using urban art was born.
We teamed up with the much-in-demand raw talent that is Odisy (AKA Alex Young), whose recent commissions include work for Marvel on the new Avengers movie promos and whose exhibitions and street art are instantly recognisable to fans of the genre, and used a combination of timelapse photography and slow motion to capture him at work.
Using four cameras at set points we filmed the evolution of Odisy’s celebratory portrait mural over the course of the day. As the artist applied spray paint and added emulsion with brushes, mops and rollers, his movements echoed an intricate choreography that fitted perfectly with Marley’s music.
The final edit depicts the creation of an homage to a hero, the Legend Bob Marley, and celebrates his music and legacy - capturing at the same time the excitement of both the 50th Anniversary of Jamaican Independence and the buzz across the capital as London prepares to greet visitors from across the world for the 2012 Olympics.
Two months in the planning; one amazing day in the making; I believe this final minute’s footage really brings the essence of Marley to modern media – thanks to the hard work of a fantastic team.
