What can the microfinance community offer to the problems of housing? The world’s poorest people live in substandard housing without access to clean water or sanitation, often in severely overcrowded conditions. 1 billion people are living in slums worldwide, and 117 million people are living in homes made of non-durable materials that do not meet building codes. Over 200 million units of affordable housing for lower income groups are needed worldwide to address the global housing deficit.
Most housing development programs have failed to have an impact on the urban and peri-urban slums. Top-down, aid driven models have been neither successful nor sustainable. Does Housing Microfinance have a role to play in addressing the housing challenge? The panel explores the opportunities and obstacles in providing scalable, sustainable and market-driven affordable housing solutions?
