“Hashem el Madani: Itinerary” (2008) explores the idea of “returning” pictures, as opposed to the popular consideration of photography as “taking” pictures. The project is based on placing framed photographs of shop owners, in the locations where pictures had been taken fifty years earlier in the old market in Saida. Forty-two photographs were placed in thirty-three locations that were indicated on a map of the old city. The pictures were all taken right outside shops, when photography was not possible inside. They depict shop owners or workers standing or sitting, individually or in groups at the door of every shop.
