If gods did inhabit the mountains...they would access them via roads like this - Daniel Friebe - Mountain High
The Giro d'Italia 2012 most important stage finishes on the top of Passo dello Stelvio at 2758 metres, the highest arrival of all time!!!
The wheather is perfect, the road is steep, 36 hairpins and 22 km to arrive on the top, the last 3 km surrounded by snow, lots of cyclists on the road, it's the day of the bike, the day of the Giro and the atmosphere is incredible!!!
The serpent of asphalt goes up on the mountain, after the second Cantoniera you pass across the Bocche del Braulio on a more gentle gradient, but the last km after the deviation to Switzerland are the toughest ones. The altitude and fatigue is an explosive mix, but the people on the road and the amazing landscape keep you going till the top where, unfortunately, you cannot pass on the arrival line!!! No problem, turn the bike and go back to the top of the famous hairpin section of the Stelvio, you can see 2 km of road and when De Gendt passes you realize how tough the stage was and how much fatigue the cyclists have to make. Cunego is behind him, then the Maglia Rosa Rodriguez and the future winner of the Giro Hesjedal with Basso, Scarponi and Uran, but what impress me more was the eyes of the ones in the back, eyes lost and silently accepting some push from the fans, this is cycling and I like to think that the wind is changed and no more dark pages will be written, I know that is not as I think, but I like to think this way!!!
