The writing ball was the first commercially sold typewriter ever made. It was invented in 1870 by Rasmus Malling-Hansen, a danish pastor, teacher and inventor. Winning prizes and competitions all over the world, it was soon overpowered by the Remington I made by Sholes & Glidden (the first typewriter to introduce the qwerty keyboard). Malling-Hansen's invention was nearly completely forgotten.
Less than 200 writing balls were built, only about 40 are known today.
This particular model was owned by the most famous writing ball user, the german philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, who bought it in 1882.
I rebuilt the writing ball in 2010, using images and patent applications as reference. The task was to create an interactive mechanical artifact.
The writing ball was modelled with 3ds max and made interactive with Unity3D. You can write letters in the original font, send them by mail and print them directly from within the application.
