What if the environment had the right to take people to court?
On 18 February 2012, the Environment Defenders Office held a mock trial, as part of the Sustainable Living Festival.
In the trial, Green Sea Turtles, inhabitants of the Great Barrier Reef, sought redress from a real judge, with real lawyers, witnesses, no script – and a very real decision.
We hope that the mock trial inspires people to reflect upon not only what the law is, but also what it might be.
Representing the Commonwealth and Queensland Governments were barristers Louise Hicks and Jane Sharpe.
