On Thursday, April 26, 2012, the PEI Abortion Rights Network held a "Speak-Out" in Charlottetown. PEI Women of many different ages shared their experiences with reproductive choice. Focusing on abortion and the morning after pill, the intention of this event was to change the culture of shame and silence around these topics through the act of storytelling.
Speak-Outs have played an important role in the history of the Pro-Choice movement as powerful events that break the culture of fear and shame that serve to silence women. Of particular note is the Redstocking Speak-Out that disrupted the 1969 New York Legislative hearing about abortion which was to include only twelve men and a catholic nun as speakers.
The Speak-Out highlighted both the lack of abortion access on PEI and the regressive politics surrounding a debate that was taking place on the same day in the federal legislature, a Conservative-initiated debate on the personhood of a fetus.
