I was one of the the VFX Supervisor's on BBC ONE - Planet Dinosaur working at Jellyfish Pictures.
Although most of my time was VFX Supervision (bidding, creative direction, pipeline, vfx production etc) I was able to squeeze in time to comp some shots including this sequence.
The only element in the shot rendered fully in CG was the creature (several passes such as shadows, color, AO passe etc), everything else used lots of real water elements which i tracked in, re-timed and composited all in Nuke sharing the 3D CG camera from XSI into Nuke to enable to create the environment. There was some realflow sims (by Lumiere studios) rendered out for the smaller spray and more interaction water elements with the creature we needed, but once mixed in with the live action water elements it all fit nicely to create the scale we wanted to show with this creature crashing out of the water.
