Beginning in mid-April, CNN’s Beijing Bureau Chief, Mike Chinoy began covering the student uprising in China. When CNN anchor Bernard Shaw filed his first report in mid-May on the eve of the Sino-Soviet summit, CNN became the network of record with its live reports on the uprising. For recognizing th story early and staying with it well after the Chinese government stopped satellite transmission of their pictures, CNN’s coverage was an exceptional public service.
The silver baton was accepted by Jane Maxwell, executive producer.
