So there are all those voices commentating sports...then there is Jim Lampley. THE voice of boxing. A voice I grew up with while watching Mike Tyson fights and the Olympics. Something you could count on. Now Lampley has his own show on HBO called Jim Lampley The Fight Game and I was called to Shoot the advertising for it. Just like Jim the show pulls no punches, is very direct and to the point. We wanted the images to reflect that so we chose dark, rich dramatic lighting.
When I told Jim that I wasn't interested in him smiling and needed the character in his face to sell his conviction we clicked. That and when he said any music for the shoot was fine that I put on 'Houses of the Holy' from Led Zeppelin's Physical Graffiti. Apparently that is Lampley's band! He looked at me like he was peering at a subject he would be interviewing and asking for just the facts. We spent an hour and half photographing. Jim has a way of making you feel that even after a short time that you really know him. I suppose that is why he is good at what he does and people want to tell him things they might not to others.
