Commencing July 2nd 2020, KINO Rotterdam presents the introduction of the 70mm film format on its biggest screen. Becoming only the second venue in the Benelux to support the ultimate film experience, starting off with the premiere of Christopher Nolan's latest, Tenet, on August 12th. To give the projector a test drive and get our audience acquainted with the the format, KINO wil screen the majestic space adventure Interstellar (2014) in 70mm.
The love for cinema is what drives the team behind KINO these past four years and this July the long cherished dream to equip their largest venue with an analogue film projector is finally realized. 'When we committed to the idea to implement 35mm we thought why not go all the way and take it to the next level: 70mm, the golden standard of film projection. So we searched for over a year to acquire a projector, assemble the technical accessories and built a projection booth that would accommodate all this. It's a decision we took with our hearts, not our heads. But as film fanatics it was an easy choice to invest in the best possible cinematic experience for our audience', says film programmer Jan de Vries. The search for the Philips DP 70, an Academy Award winning projector led from the US, China, Russia to the United Kingdom and ended in the tiny Dutch village of Geldrop. There they found one in perfect running condition. With the help of many specialized technicians, projectionists and enthusiasts they managed to restore a classic piece of Dutch technical engineering to its former glory to provide this unprecedented cinematic experience in KINO.
