This was a video presented for a research project for a class I took at my college. More recently, this is an electronic project for the annual 2012 APA PT@CC Student Presentation Contest that I decided to submit. I choose to talk about schizophrenia and motherhood. A single mother has a vast list of responsibilities! She must do nearly everything there is to being a parent: love, tend to her children, and provide for them all on her own. However, the mother and family quickly learn how difficult these tasks will be for her, due to her illness.
In this video I wanted to give a brief background of the disorder on its own, and to explain what schizophrenia is to perhaps someone with little or no information about the illness. Later go into the mother's life, and take time talking with her, her mother, and daughter about her condition. The interview that takes place through more than half of this video (away from the introduction of schizophrenia, and the conclusion of the interview towards the end) we later discussed the challenges that sets the mother apart from the daughters life, and her own story of her mothers schizophrenia.
The main point of this video was to show how impacting it is to not only the person with the illness, but to the whole family. I focused in on the mother-daughther relationship as well, to show the difficulties and reconnections between a mother and daughter standpoint, because it is hard enough being a single parent, as it is being a young (daughter) girl. Although, from being an outsider looking in, do we really know how much harder it is being with a mother with schizophrenia?
