The concept behind my Cine Roman project is to project to the viewer the atmosphere of the wait, in the surf.
I used the extract from John Ashbery’s Grand Gallop which I included in my project to convey the feeling and the atmosphere of the wait out in the surf. Surfing is all about waiting for the perfect wave, and patience. My film was created to share those moments of magic with the viewer, whom may or may not experience that.
Throughout my creation process of the project I photographed sample images to get a feel for the type of film I wanted to create, then chose the final ones which I would use. The 5 second piece of film footage I included gave the viewer a closer look into the magical moments in the waiting.
I wanted my photographs to be able to speak for themselves, and I created this by capturing images that are rare and busy. I used a range of different photography techniques and editing transitions to create the notion of the passing of time. A slow shutter speed which was used in a number of my images, shows the passing of time and magical moments which are usually unseen or forgotten.
Chris Marker’s La Jetee (1962) was an inspiration to me, as Marker uses images to to tell a story and generate emotion, which is what I have tried to convey in my film.
