CLASP, in collaboration with the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), organized an interactive online webinar on the Indian model of policy development for cooling appliances.
BEE’s S&L program regulates major cooling appliances on the market, including room air conditioners for residential applications and chillers for commercial applications. These policies also contribute towards short and long term recommendations of India Cooling Action Plan and have resulted in significant market transformation towards efficient products. The policy formulation for this broad spectrum of residential and commercial cooling equipment required addressing multiple challenges and innovative implementation approaches. Since the inception of the RAC labeling program, a cumulative 74 Terawatts-hours (TWh) of electricity use and 60 million tons of carbon emissions have been avoided through 2018.
As other developing economies engage in the formulation of energy efficiency policies to boost their clean energy transitions, BEE’s experience can be a valuable model to replicate. The webinar provides a unique opportunity for participants from emerging economies across the world to enhance their understanding on the comprehensive policy coverage for cooling appliances and associated impacts.
