NB The full title of this film appears in the opening credits but Simon tells me he's successfully kept his name off the net since 1999 so out of considiration for him, his name only appears in the film and not in any searchable text accompanying the film.
In March 2012 I accompanied my husband Brian on a business trip to Bath. Naturally my primary goal was to find where the hipsters hung out, and within an hour I'd found them, in The Bell pub, home to Bath's music scene and creative community. Serving behind the bar was a man whose presence fascinated me. There was something different about him. He was a maverick, I could tell just by looking at him.
After taking photos at the Roman Baths and the Botanical Gardens the next day, I went back to The Bell and this time got talking to him. His name was Simon and he told me how he'd designed and built the crazy looking three wheeler bike parked out the front of the pub. I asked him if he'd do an interview to camera.
I haven't made a film for over 30 years since I was at film school when we were using Super 8 and 16mm. I'd used Premiere Pro for knocking together band footage and spoken word performances, but never done any proper editing on it, so this has been a huge learning curve but I've loved every minute.
And hopefully, someone out there will see Simon and sponsor him because this bike needs to be put into production, it is simple, brilliant, ergonomic and beautiful.
