On the morning of Sunday the 17th June 2012, soldiers were seen supervising the felling of numerous trees in the Dhanmondi Lake in Dhaka. When asked over the phone, the officer in charge Major Iqbal claimed no trees were being cut, but they were merely being 'trimmed'. Upon being told that several trees had already been felled from the base, he apologised, stating that he would take steps to stop further felling. Major Iqbal gave no explanation as to why these trees were felled and whether the army had any authorisation to do so. Neither did he turn up at the Park to see for himself what his soldiers were doing.
