Big Pharma, black-box warnings, off-label use, post-marketing “adverse events”…this show was complicated! And in a world of drugs that can go by three different names (chemical, generic and/or brand) confusing as well. It all made Dangerous Prescription a tough story to wrangle into shape. At one point the producer, Andy Liebman, had enough bad drug stories to easily make a 2-hour program.
The project also lacked footage of patients in hospital beds to help illustrate the content. (No hospital would clear a release to shoot.) Desperate for visuals, I finally grabbed a DV camera and followed my dad into a local hospital during an appointment. This lead to an unplanned ER visit, which also resulted in more coverage of heart monitors, ambulances and gurney POV. Originally all this DV footage was to be replaced, but "content is king" and those shots stayed in the picture.
