In the spring, UVP presented the world premiere of a new piece by video pioneer, William Wegman. Created specifically for the UVP Everson site, Flo/Flow is Wegman’s latest in a long line of human-canine collaborations dating back to the 1970s, when Wegman began to work with his dog, Man Ray. Ever since, the endearingly deadpan presence of Weimaraners has been a central feature of Wegman’s work. In Flo/Flow, two Weimaraners lay motionless and monumental as mythical gatekeepers, their uncanny twinning resonant with the flanking wings of the Everson building. They stare out, literally unmoved but for the sidelong tracking of their eyes, which seem to look now at the night sky, now at the plaza below, briefly at one another, and now straight back at the viewer with that humorous blend of existential anxiety and utter indifference that somehow only a dog can perfectly convey.
