On Memorial Day weekend, the “Times Square Dunk Tank,” was launched to an enormously receptive crowd on the Clear Channel Spectacolor HD screen. The “Carny Barker” invited locals and tourists alike to step right up and help dunk either the Painted Lady (played by pin-up model and Oxygen TV’s Best Ink star Sabina Kelley) or the Strong Man (played by Hollywood stuntman Robert Miller). Players voted by Twitter to see who got dunked and watched as their tweets were broadcast on the over sized HD screen. The votes were tallied, and the crowd manipulated a floating “virtual” ball to the target sending the dunk winner/victim into a gleaming pool.
The experience will continue every hour throughout the summer, and is extending beyond New York City by a Facebook contest in which participants nationwide can compete for a chance to get dunked on the big screen in Times Square. The winner will be chosen in July and flown out to NYC to see him or herself dunked over Labor Day weekend. For contest details visit: facebook.com/dunkme
The Dunk Tank is the latest, most advanced demonstration to date of how digital billboards are interacting with social media and using gesture recognition innovations to transform the medium into a new form of advertainment.
