The project brief was to create an autobiographical narrative with a graphic design focus. As I paged through notes and notes, moleskine after moleskine, I discovered hidden quotes I had buried deep in those little black books. These are the 3 that I chose to explore in the project.
For the medium, I decided to explore traditional sign painting and the art form that it is, and one that we are losing. Through my research in the SCAD library and across the vast world wide web, I was able to compile a large database of images and authentic typography used in this art. Scan after scan of type specimen, I would layout the composition in Adobe Illustrator and then once that was worked through, reverse the design so it would print suitable for a transfer (a technique I found to be traditional). From there acetone was used to transfer a light image of the letterforms onto the wood and then the paint was applied freehand overtop.
