Greg Gregg has been involved in many political, social and environmental movements and initiatives. He is a founding member of the RI Green Party and was a candidate for Mayor of Providence. His greatest passion is the environment. He organized his first environmental event in high school and has been active ever since. The New England Office of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) selected Greg Gerritt to receive its Environmental Merit Award in recognition of his exceptional work and commitment to the environment in 2011. Few activists are one dimensional and Gerritt is no exception. From organizing the composting project for the Rhode Island community, to free coats and boots for the needy, to challenging the political status quo, he has done much to raise our level of consciousness. Gerritt writes on a variety of topics and offers yet another unique perspective on the link between our economy and environment. He prescribes prosperity over growth. The path to prosperity is reforestation, rebuilding and reclaiming the soil, and other measures. He asserts that growth benefits primarily the top 5% in income; prosperity will benefit all others and will help even poorer members to prosper as well. When discussing economic growth areas he points out the increase in farming, farmers’ markets and fisheries as Rhode Island’s growth industries.
