In the last 30 years, we have lost half of the planet’s coral. Scientists predict in another 30 years the planet will lose nearly all of the world’s coral.
But there is a glimmer of hope: so-called ‘super corals’. They exist in small numbers in very unusual places. The Red Sea and the urban corals of Miami are examples. Three scientists are on the forefront of this research: Ruth Gates from the USA, Madeleine Van Oppen in Australia, and Julia Baum from Canada. Their work offers hope that our coral reefs can be rescued and protected in a warming world.
