The USAT Liberty was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine just south-west of Bali in January 1942.
She was taken in tow by an allied destroyer and towed towards Buleleng Port on the north coast of Bali.
But the situation was worse than thought, and the crippled ship only made it as far as Tulamben.
She was run aground on the shore where most of her fittings and propeller sat against the shore at
Tulamnen from 1942 until 1963, where the huge volcanic eruption of Mt. Agung took place. Violent
earthquake below the surface to rest where she does today.
