„Josip Novak’s Mirage and the Spiders“ is medium-length documentary film about Josip Novak’s film „Rudareva sreća“ („Miner’s luck“). Made in 1928 this is capitalist propaganda film aimed to propel mining industry in South-east Serbia, particularly in coal mine Jerma near Stara planina. Film „Miner’s Luck” is inspired by legend about Tsar Radovan’s treasure and criticizes superstitions of national myths suggesting that the real national treasure is contained in industrialization and modernization. From contemporary perspective “Miner’s Luck” is utopian film about Serbia and Yugoslavia as bourgeoisie (industrial) country. This film opposes history according to which film in Serbia and Kingdom of Yugoslavia before 2nd World War rose from the atmosphere of amateur enthusiasm.
