The Alchemic Island exposes the microcosms within the macrocosm of Cockatoo Island.
The microcosm encapsulates the small, characteristic qualities or features of something much larger. The sculpture is a physical representation of these often unseen, characteristics that lay within Cockatoo Island: the cracks in the island; roots of the trees; veins in the leaf; the canals which cut through the countryside; and the sleek tangled shape of seaweed. The sculpture is made of steel, encompassing and amalgamating these features with the industrialised nature of the island.
By touching the screen, a connection is made between the individual and the island. The transference of imagery from the sculpture to the individual exposes its underlying detail, connecting us to the island’s fabric.
