In May of 2012, my friend Matthew and I launched a home-made space capsule into the upper atmosphere.
We came up with the idea during summer of last year, but lots of preparation was involved in the making of this project. The "capsule" was a Styrofoam beer cooler containing a GoPro to record video, my iPhone to track it, California Poppy seeds*, and an egg**. The cooler was attached on a string to a 7 ft diameter weather balloon and a home-made parachute. The balloon popped earlier than expected, so the capsule is believed to have reached around 60,000-70,000 ft MSL as compared to the anticipated 100,000 ft ceiling.

*I believe this is the first state flower to reach an altitude this high.
**Which came first into space, the chicken or the egg?-- Now we know!
