As you get older, the clear gel that fills the middle of your eye may shrink and pull on the retina, usually it won't cause problems but sometimes it pulls hard enough to tear the retina. If that happens, fluid may go through the retinal tear and lift the retina from where it should be. While it is being pulled you may see flashes of light or stars. The retina does not work when it is detached and almost always causes blindness.
