The NE 21st Ave Bridge over the Columbia Slough out near the Portland International Airport sees a lot of heavy freight traffic. The success of local companies depends on its integrity. Unfortunately, the structure supporting the bridge has become so unsafe that a debilitating weight restriction was implemented and without any improvements, a complete closure was inevitable. Rather than replacing an entire bridge, though, City of Portland Bridge Engineer David O'Longaigh, designed a solution that modernizes the bridge at one fifth the cost of full replacement. His design is saving the city approximately $2 million. The construction should end in the Fall and local businesses will be able to resume transport of their heavy freight without safety concerns.
