Mac Galap is a farmer from Tupaya, a small town in the Cordillera Region of the Philippines. Two years ago, he was convinced to start using genetically modified 'BT' Corn. The Department of Agriculture recommended the seeds and he got the first packages of pesticides for free. Since he saw that other farmers using the BT corn, produced more than before, he bought the seeds himself and began spraying. Now two years later these farmers start having liver and kidney diseases. Their toe nails fall off, and they suffer from breathing problems. Mac can't afford the chemical pesticides anymore, and his field is already depleted. If he doesn't use the pesticides, he can't produce anything. The packages aren't free anymore. The whole town is stuck in debt. And Mac can't pay the school money for his children. He wrote a song about it. Share, comment, like this if you wan't to know what is in your food. And stay tuned for 'Radio Cordillera' - a documentary about - our - food security.
