Straight from the heart
Last night we were invited to a secret screening of the premiere of Searching for Sugarman the heart wrenching story of a brilliant musician named Sixto Rodriguez who lived his life unaware that he had become a legend bigger than Elvis and Dylan over in South Africa during apartheid! This is the story of how a music journalist managed to track him down in deepest poverty stricken Detroit, even though he was believed to have committed suicide on stage a long time ago. After a life spent in obscurity doing manual labor, he was invited to South Africa where he performed several concerts to thousands of adoring fans! The film is beautifully told through very evocative scenery and music and is highly emotional! Nothing though compared to the overwhelming avalanche of emotions felt when immediately after the screening the man himself Sixto Rodriguez materialised on stage, as if by magic, to perform for an incredulous audience! Amazing and beautiful does not begin to describe what many will remember as one of the best nights ever! Rodriguez at 69 was helped on stage but then proceeded to play a seriously good gig that would put many youngsters to shame. A true rock star, a humble and most deserving legend. He touched us all with his music and his fairy tale story which reflects so very badly on the music industry and human greed. Sixto, thank you for sharing your story thus reminding us what that is to be a true artist and a beautiful human being...
