Dr. Kit M. Kovacs is a Professor in Arctic Biology at University Studies in Svalbard and the leader of the Biodiversity Research Section at the Norwegian Polar Institute. She has studied marine mammals for over 30 years and has had the good fortune during this time to work with a broad diversity of species of seals and whales. Dr Kovac’s early career work was focussed in reproductive behavioural ecology and evolutionary
theory, but with time has broadened her interests and activities to include work with diving physiology, foraging behaviour, and practical management and conservation oriented work. Dr. Kovacs is a Past-President of the Society for Marine Mammalogy, a science advisor to many Polar management processes, and is the current Chair of the IUCN’s Pinniped Specialist Group.
