About Nelson Rodrigues
If he had not died on December 21, 1980, Nelson Rodrigues (August 23, 1912 – December 21, 1980) would be 100 years old in 2012. His centenary is noteworthy because he is the most acclaimed and widely staged playwright in Brazil. No one before Nelson had ever grasped the Brazilian character so profoundly. The raw portrayal of the individual is one of the particularities of Nelson’s work that guarantees its timelessness.
About the play
The Serpent was Nelson Rodrigues’s last play. It is a one-act where the author demonstrates his unique ability of synthesis. It tells the story of two sisters and their husbands living in the same apartment. The play opens with Ligia and Decio getting a divorce. It’s been a year since they got married and they still haven’t been able to have sex. Ligia is in despair and considers taking her life when her sister Guida, in order to save her sister's life makes a desperate offer. From that point on, their lives take a turn that none of them could have ever expected.
