Morningstar Ranch was an open commune, a Diggers commune- during the late 60s, which meant the land was open to anyone who wanted to come. When the owner of the property decided to cede control of his land to produce absolutely open space, the law came down on him. Property ownership is a technology that controls the use of space for limited benefits. As a right for individuals, it has a totalizing impact on everyone elses’ relationship to space. It conditions behaviors within all space and with other humans and non-humans. While it is normal that a property owner might cede access over his land to a public to reach destinations like beaches, Gottlieb was denied the right to open his land to all, to take it forever off the market.
