This talk took place on July 26, 2020 as part of Typographics Conference. The live-streaming, recording, and archiving of the event was made possible by the generosity of Google Fonts.
How does typography take on the characteristics of a story? Can it capture a specific voice or evoke a narrative? Can it foreshadow? Surveying a range of editorial design work—from The New York Times Magazine to GQ to Here—this presentation will explore conceptual typography in print. I’ll examine how illustration has informed my typographic sensibility and why expressive typography is essential to effective editorial design.
